Award-Winning Soprano Gabrielle Turgeon Prepares for European Premiere and Engagements, New Talent Recognized in Classical Music

Canadian-American soprano Gabrielle Turgeon is set to embark on a significant period of performances, including a role in a European world premiere later in 2026, following her recent accolades. Her upcoming engagements also include performances with the Los Angeles Opera in June 2026 and at the Aspen Music Festival in July 2026, marking a busy schedule for the acclaimed vocalist.

Turgeon, who was the Grand First Prize Winner of Le Concours OSM in November 2025, further distinguished herself as a finalist in the 2026 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. Although not the overall winner, she received the prestigious Anne de Richemont Smithers Award for exceptional performance, which included a $10,000 USD prize. Her upcoming appearances include a role in Los Angeles Opera's production of Die Zauberflöte in June 2026 and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Aspen Music Festival in July 2026.

In other news recognizing emerging talent, Hannah Chen has been named the recipient of the 2026 Barbara M. Irish Harp Award by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Chen was awarded a substantial $5,500 cash prize, acknowledging her excellence in harp performance.

Looking ahead, Kalamazoo is preparing to host the 51st annual Stulberg International String Competition from May 15–17, 2026. The competition will showcase 12 elite young string musicians under the age of 20, representing five different countries. These semifinalists were chosen from a pool of 226 applicants spanning 18 countries. Over two days, competitors will vie for medals and more than $30,000 in cash prizes, followed by master classes. The event signifies a new chapter for the competition under the leadership of Executive Director Garret Jones.

The announcements collectively highlight a vibrant period for classical music, celebrating both established award-winners embarking on new ventures and the recognition of promising young artists.
