Hong Kong Set to Host FIDE World Team Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships in 2026

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially announced that Hong Kong will make its debut as the host city for the prestigious World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. The event is scheduled to take take place from June 17 to 21, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the city's growing presence in the international chess arena.

This landmark tournament, to be held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, promises to bring together 42 teams from over 50 countries. More than 300 world-class players are expected to compete for a substantial prize purse of €500,000, underscoring the high stakes and competitive intensity of the championships.

Among the confirmed participants are two of the sport's most prominent figures. Reigning blitz champion team will see the formidable Magnus Carlsen playing on board 1, while Fabiano Caruana is confirmed to play on board 2 for his respective team. Their participation is anticipated to draw considerable global attention and elevate the competitive standard of the event.

The championships will feature two distinct formats. The Rapid format, scheduled from June 17 to 19, will consist of a 12-round Swiss tournament. Players in this segment will adhere to a time control of 15 minutes per game, with an additional 10-second increment per move, ensuring dynamic and fast-paced contests.

Following the rapid games, the tournament will transition to the Blitz format from June 20 to 21. This segment will commence with pool stages, leading into a thrilling knockout phase for the top 16 teams. The blitz games will feature an even faster time control of 3 minutes per game, complemented by a 2-second increment per move, demanding quick thinking and strategic precision from the competitors.

Hong Kong's selection as the host city for the first time reflects its growing capacity to stage major international sporting events.
