GM Javokhir Sindarov and GM Vaishali Rameshbabu have emerged victorious in the recently concluded 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament held in Cyprus. Sindarov dominated the Open section, securing his place in the upcoming World Championship match against GM Gukesh Dommaraju, while Rameshbabu claimed the Women's Candidates title in a thrilling final-round finish.

Sindarov's performance in the Open section was particularly remarkable, demonstrating overwhelming control throughout the tournament. He secured his win with a formidable 10/14 total score, highlighted by a perfect 6/7 halfway. His campaign was characterized by an undefeated run, comprising six wins and eight draws, solidifying his position as the top contender. For his exceptional achievement, Sindarov was awarded €170,000.

In the Women's Candidates, Vaishali Rameshbabu showcased resilience and strategic prowess, ultimately clinching her title on the final round. Her victory marks a significant milestone in her career, earning her €65,400. The conclusion of both tournaments in Cyprus saw the final standings posted after Round 14, confirming the new challengers for the world championship titles.

The Open section also featured strong competition from other grandmasters. Anish Giri secured second place with a score of 8.5 points, while Fabiano Caruana finished third, accumulating 7.5 points. The tournament served as a crucial qualifier, setting the stage for the pinnacle of competitive chess.
