The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) recently disbursed a total of $18,450 to the winners of its 2026 college student essay contest. The organization announced awards for top essays selected from a broad field, with individual prizes ranging from $500 to $3,500. Among the recognized winners were Artem Khaiet, Astrid Jepson, Alexander Safranak, Whitney Brown, Aaron Love, Sean-Patrick Dulcio, and Ava Jackson. These students represent various institutions, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, UCLA, Bradley University, Hutchinson Community College, the University of Kentucky, Florida A&M University, and Howard University.
In Louisiana, Northwestern State University (NSU) announced the winners of its 2026 Louisiana High School Essay Contest. Emmy Habetz of Southside High School in Youngsville, Claire Hebert of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, and Ellise Bryant of C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport were recognized as the top three students. Their essays focused on Louisiana-related topics, earning them scholarships of $200 per semester from NSU, potentially totaling up to $1,600 over four years, in addition to cash prizes.
Further recognition came in Virginia, where Grace White, a recent graduate of Matoaca High, was named one of 10 winners in the state's STEAM-H essay contest. White, now enrolled at Virginia Tech, was honored for her achievement at the Executive Mansion. The contest highlighted her exceptional writing within the STEAM-H fields.
Additionally, DmvEdu.org announced the recipients of its scholarship award essays, recognizing several students for their submissions. Subin Kang was among the named winners, with the organization awarding four essays $500 each and granting six additional distinctions of $350. These awards underscore the ongoing commitment of various entities to foster academic excellence and support student writers.
